The Best Time of Day for Outdoor Family Photos in Central Arkansas

Have you ever wondered why some family photos have that soft, dreamy glow while others look harsh and washed out? Or why photographers are always talking about golden hour?

The time of day you schedule your family photos can make a bigger difference than you might think!

When planning your outdoor family session, we aren't just choosing a pretty location. We're also thinking about the light, the temperature, the season, and, most importantly, what will help your family feel comfortable enough to be yourselves.

As a Central Arkansas family photographer, I love helping families create images that feel natural, beautiful, and full of life. And choosing the right time of day is one of the ways we can make that happen!

Let's talk about your options.

Golden Hour: The Favorite for a Reason

If you've spent any time looking at outdoor photography, you've probably heard the term golden hour. This is the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the sunlight is softer, warmer, and often more flattering than the light we experience in the middle of the day.

For many outdoor family sessions, the hour leading up to sunset is my favorite.

Why?

The light is softer. Instead of strong overhead sunlight creating harsh shadows under eyes and noses, the lower sun gives us a softer, more even look.

Everything has a beautiful glow. Golden hour can bring warmth to skin tones, create a lovely glow through the trees, and add depth to your images without distracting from the people in them.

The atmosphere feels magical. Tall grass, open fields, tree-lined trails, and even familiar places can take on a completely different look when the light starts to soften.

But here's something I want you to remember: beautiful light is only one part of a meaningful photograph. I want your gallery to include the way your kids laugh, the way your family interacts, and the little moments you might not even realize are happening. The right light helps us tell that story beautifully.

What Time Is Golden Hour in Central Arkansas?

Golden hour changes throughout the year because sunset times change.

During the summer, golden-hour sessions often happen later in the evening. In the fall and winter, we can typically schedule earlier. The exact time also depends on our location. A wide-open field catches light differently than a wooded trail, so I consider the setting when helping you choose your session time.

If you're dreaming of those warm, glowy images, we'll work together to find the best time for your family and the location we've chosen.

Morning Sessions: An Underrated Option

Can I let you in on a little secret? Evening sessions aren't the only time we can create beautiful outdoor family photos!

Morning sessions can be absolutely beautiful, and they're an option I wish more families would consider.

Shortly after sunrise, the light can be soft and flattering, especially in open spaces. The air is often cooler, too, which can make a big difference during those hot Arkansas summer months.

Morning sessions can be especially helpful for families with younger children who are happiest earlier in the day.

Think about it: if your toddler is ready for a nap by late afternoon or your little one tends to be happiest after breakfast, why schedule your session when they're already running out of steam? Instead, we can plan around the time your family naturally feels its best.

And don't worry! Morning sessions don't mean sacrificing beautiful images. With the right location and lighting, we can create photographs that are just as meaningful and lovely as those taken in the evening.

Sometimes, the best time for your family photos isn't the most popular time. It's the time that works best for your family.

What About Midday Family Photos?

Let's be honest. Sometimes schedules are complicated. Between work, school, sports, naps, and everything else life throws at us, the perfect sunset appointment doesn't always fit.

So, can we take family photos in the middle of the day?

Absolutely! However, midday sunlight presents a few challenges.

When the sun is high, it can create harsh shadows, bright highlights, and squinting eyes. Open fields with little shade can be especially tricky. That doesn't mean beautiful images are impossible. It simply means we need to be more intentional about our location and how we use the light.

Depending on the setting, we might look for:

Areas with open shade.

Tree-covered paths that soften the sunlight.

Locations with buildings or other natural shade.

Spots where we can position your family to avoid harsh overhead light.

The goal is to work with the light rather than fight against it.

If midday is the only time that works for your family, let's talk! We can consider the options and find a setting that gives us the best chance of creating images you'll love.

Does the Season Matter?

Absolutely!

Here in Central Arkansas, each season brings its own opportunities for outdoor family photography.

Spring: Fresh Greenery and Soft Light

  • Spring brings fresh growth, blooming flowers, and beautiful shades of green. It's a wonderful time for families who love a natural, fresh look.
  • Morning sessions can be especially comfortable as temperatures begin to rise, while evening sessions give us another opportunity to enjoy softer light.

Summer: Morning or Evening Is Best

  • Arkansas summers can be HOT. And when I say hot, I mean the kind of hot that makes standing in a field feel like a workout! That's one reason I love considering morning sessions during the summer. Cooler temperatures can help everyone stay more comfortable, especially little ones.
  • Evening sessions are another favorite because the light becomes softer as the sun gets lower. We just need to plan around the later sunset times.

Fall: Golden Light and Beautiful Colors

  • Fall is a favorite for family photos, and for good reason!Between the changing leaves, warm colors, and cooler temperatures, it's a beautiful season for outdoor sessions.
  • Evening light can be gorgeous this time of year, but morning sessions can be equally lovely depending on the location and the look you're hoping to achieve.

One thing to keep in mind: fall dates tend to fill quickly, so it's worth planning ahead if you have a specific weekend or time of day in mind.

Winter: Earlier Evenings and a Different Kind of Beauty

  • Winter sessions can offer a beautiful, simple look with softer colors and a quieter landscape.Because the sun sets earlier, we can often schedule evening sessions without pushing too far into the evening hours.
  • The key is watching the weather and choosing clothing that keeps everyone comfortable. We can create beautiful photographs without needing a field full of flowers or a canopy of fall leaves.

What If My Kids Won't Cooperate at That Time?

This is one of my favorite things to talk about because I want you to take a little pressure off yourself before your session even begins. Your children do not have to be perfectly behaved for your family photos to be meaningful.

In fact, some of my favorite moments happen when kids are moving, exploring, laughing, or simply being themselves.

If your child is happiest in the morning, let's consider a morning session. If they tend to warm up slowly, we can plan enough time for them to get comfortable. And if your family is full of energy, we can choose a location where there's room to walk, play, explore, and interact.

I don't want your family session to feel like a long list of instructions your children have to follow.

I want you to have space to enjoy each other while I capture the connections that make your family yours. Because years from now, you probably won't remember whether your toddler sat perfectly still or whether everyone looked at the camera at the exact same time. But you'll remember that little hand reaching for yours. The way your kids laughed together. The way your family felt in this season of life.

Those are the moments worth holding on to.

So, What's the Best Time for Your Family Photos?

If you're looking for a simple answer, here's my recommendation:

For soft, warm, glowy images: Consider the hour before sunset.

For cooler temperatures during an Arkansas summer: Consider an early morning session.

For younger children who are happiest earlier in the day: Let's talk about a morning appointment.

For families with limited scheduling flexibility: We'll explore the best location and lighting options for the time you have available.

There isn't one perfect time that works for every family, every location, and every season. That's why I don't believe in choosing a session time based on a pretty photograph alone. We want to consider the light, of course, but we also want to think about your children, your schedule, and the kind of experience you want to have together.

Because the goal isn't simply to create a beautiful photograph. It's to create photographs that bring you back to this season of life. The little personalities, the relationships, the laughter, and even the beautiful chaos that makes your family yours.

And when we combine meaningful moments with beautiful light, we get the best of both worlds.
