How to Prep Your Kiddos for a Family Photography Session (Without the Stress!)

Let’s be honest: getting the whole family ready for photos can sometimes feel like a full-time job. Between picking outfits, getting everyone out the door, and hoping the kids cooperate, it’s easy to feel like you need a vacation before your family session even begins!

But here’s the good news: your kids don’t have to be perfectly behaved, and your family doesn’t have to be perfect to have beautiful, meaningful photos.

My goal is to capture your family as you are right now. The giggles, the snuggles, the silly personalities, and even a little bit of chaos. We’ll laugh, play, move, and let your session unfold at a pace that works for your family.

There are a few things you can do beforehand to help everyone have a better experience, though! Here are my favorite tips for preparing your kiddos for family photos without adding more stress to your day.

1. Feed Them Before You Arrive

Hangry kids and family photos? Let's just say that's not a combination we're aiming for!

Make sure your kiddos have a good meal or snack before your session. If we're shooting close to dinnertime, plan ahead so they aren't running on empty. And don't forget to bring a little water, especially during those warmer Central Arkansas evenings.

A full belly can make a world of difference in everyone's mood, including Mom and Dad's!

2. Don't Skip Naptime if They Need It

You know your kids best. If your little one still needs an afternoon nap, try to keep that part of your routine as normal as possible before your session.

I know schedules can get tricky, especially when we're working around that beautiful golden-hour light, but a well-rested kiddo is often a much happier kiddo. And if naps don't happen or the day doesn't go according to plan? Don't panic! We can work with what we've got.

3. Make the Drive Part of the Fun

Here's a little secret: you don't have to start preparing your kids for the session hours before you arrive.

In fact, I recommend keeping the conversation about photos pretty low-key on the way there. Repeated reminders to smile, behave, listen to the photographer, and make Mom happy can accidentally create pressure before we even get started.

Instead, make the drive fun! Play a silly game, tell your favorite family jokes, sing songs, or share funny stories.

Let's have them arrive feeling happy and relaxed instead of worried about whether they're going to do everything right.

We're going to make memories, not take a behavior test!

4. Choose Outfits They Can Actually Move In

Yes, we want those beautiful, coordinated outfits. But you know what we want even more? Kids who can move, play, snuggle, and be themselves without constantly tugging at their clothes.

There are so many beautiful outfit options that are both comfortable and camera-ready. Think soft fabrics, layers, movement, and pieces that let your kids climb, walk, twirl, and sit comfortably. If your child hates a particular fabric, refuses to wear certain shoes, or feels uncomfortable in a specific outfit, let's find another option!

You can absolutely coordinate your family's outfits without sacrificing comfort. And trust me, when your kids are comfortable, it shows in your photos.

5. Bribes Aren't Always Bad (Keep Them Reasonable!)

Let's talk about the elephant in the room: sometimes, a little incentive can go a long way!

For older kiddos who understand the idea of working toward a reward, promising a small treat or a fun activity afterward can be helpful. Just keep it reasonable and avoid making the entire session revolve around what they'll get when it's over.

I also bring a little prize bag for the kids! This gives them something fun to look forward to without having to promise a specific toy or treat ahead of time where the pressure to perform is more over-shadowing on how they "perform" for you. The goal isn't to make them perform for a reward. It's to keep the experience positive and give them a little extra excitement along the way.

And remember, not every child responds to the same things. We'll figure out what works for yours!

6. Leave the Expectations at Home

This might be the most important tip on the entire list.

Please don't expect your toddler to stand still and smile for an hour. Don't expect your shy child to warm up immediately. And don't expect every single image to include everyone looking directly at the camera with a perfect smile.

Kids are kids! They have big feelings, short attention spans, silly personalities, and their own ideas about how the world should work.

Sometimes, the best moments happen when we stop trying to control every little thing.

Your toddler might want to explore. Your big kid might want to tell me seventeen facts about dinosaurs. Your teenager might take a little time to warm up. That's okay!

I'll guide you when needed, help with posing when you aren't sure what to do, and give your family prompts that encourage real interaction.

We don't need perfect behavior to create beautiful photographs.

7. Come Ready to Have FUN With Your Kids!

This is my favorite piece of advice: don't come to your session thinking you have to manage your kids the entire time. Come ready to enjoy them!

Hold their hands. Chase them through the grass. Let them show you something interesting they found. Snuggle them close. Tell them a silly joke. Dance with them. Laugh at the things they say.

You don't have to know how to pose, and you don't have to make everything look perfect. That's where I come in!

My sessions are built around connection, movement, and the little moments that make your family yours. We'll laugh, play, explore, and adjust as we go. If your little one needs a break, we'll make room for it. If your kids are full of energy, we'll find ways to use it.

Your session should feel less like a photoshoot and more like time spent together.

Because one day, you'll look back at these photographs and remember more than what everyone was wearing or whether every hair was in place. You'll remember how little their hands were, how they laughed, the way they reached for you, and what life felt like in this season of your family's story.

And those are the memories worth keeping.

A Little Reminder Before Your Family Session

You don't need to show up with perfectly behaved children, a perfectly planned day, or a perfectly posed family.

Just bring your people, make sure everyone has had something to eat, and come ready to spend some time together.

I'll take care of the rest!

If you're looking for a Central Arkansas family photographer who values genuine connection just as much as beautiful portraits, I'd love to help tell your family's story.
